How many places are on offer?
Purpose of Role:
Being a board member will give you the opportunity to shape the strategic direction, vision and mission of a charity which is making a positive impact to the lives of a wide range of people within the Nottingham community, building awareness of our local waterways, while also improving
wellbeing. You will have the opportunity to also volunteer with us if desired and therefore be trained in boat handling, up to Skipper level if desired (once experience level is met).
ROLE DESCRIPTION:
The Board of trustees oversees the work of the charity, providing strategic direction and
support to staff and volunteers. This is a voluntary role with no renumeration, although
travel may be expensed. The Board currently meet once a month, we expect Trustees to
attend at least 6 meetings per year, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
Trustees have statutory duties to uphold:
● To ensure that the organisation complies with charity law, company law and any
other relevant legislation or regulations
● To ensure the organisation uses its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects:
the charity must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own
objects, no matter how worthwhile or charitable those activities are
● To contribute actively to the board of trustees' role in giving firm strategic direction
to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and
evaluating performance against agreed targets
● To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation.
● To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation
● To ensure the financial stability of the organisation
● To protect and manage the property of the charity and to ensure the proper
investment of the charity's funds
In addition to the above statutory duties, each trustee should use any specific skills,
knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This
may involve:
● Scrutinising board papers
● Leading discussions
● Focusing on key issues
● Providing guidance on new initiatives
● Other issues in which the trustee has special expertise
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Essential:
• Passionate about adding value to the Nottingham community
• Good communication and listening skills
• Good problem - solving skills and able to contribute to meeting discussion
• Good, independent judgement and willingness to speak their mind
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team
• Able to attend a minimum of 50% of meetings, held monthly
• Can commit to at least 12 months of service on the Board
• Supportive and willing to represent the exchange at other meetings, shows and
networking events.
• Able to respect parameters of confidentiality
• Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of
Trusteeship
Desirable:
• Experience in fundraising
• Experience in marketing
• Experience of being a Trustee/contributing to a Board
