Purpose of Role:
Literacy Volunteers is a small independent registered charity, founded 27 years ago, based in Nottingham. The charity has an established a network of over 120 volunteers who work in schools based in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. We help children overcome literacy challenges and develop a love of reading and develop their communication and social skills.

The charity is looking to recruit a new Chair of its Board of Trustees to build upon its success to date and steer the charity through its next stage of development and growth.
ROLE DESCRIPTION:
The Chair leads the Board, ensuring that it governs the charity effectively. The Chair is responsible for driving the board to set and implement the agreed strategy in the delivery of the charity’s vision and mission. The Chair leads in an inclusive way, supporting the Board to work together well, and providing support and challenge to the employees. The Chair is also an ambassador for the charity.

The responsibilities of the Chair include:

• providing leadership for the board of trustees in their role of setting the strategy and policy of the organisation
• overseeing the charity’s fund-raising activities
• setting agendas for Board meetings
• chairing Board meetings
• ensuring that decisions and actions agreed at meetings are carried out
• representing the organisation at functions and meetings, and acting as a spokesperson, where appropriate
• communicating with employees and volunteers to keep an overview of the organisation's affairs and providing support as appropriate
• leading in setting up support and supervision for employees
• sitting on appointment and disciplinary panels
• commentary for the Annual Report
• chairing the AGM
• attending necessary training, e.g. Safeguarding.

An Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check will be required for all Trustees.

This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

Time commitment (Estimated at 1 - 3 days per month)
● Attending quarterly Board meetings, with a little additional time for reading paperwork and communications.
● Monthly scheduled meeting with Schools and Early Years Leads with flexibility to respond swiftly to occasional ad hoc issues.
● Attending other events such as our AGM.

All Board meetings are generally in person. Ordinarily, Board meetings are held at our office Woodthorpe Grange, Woodthorpe Park.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
• Corporate leadership experience at a board level (private or public sector)
• Experience of chairing Board meetings
• Proven ability of helping to define and drive strategy
• Experience of monitoring progress against objectives and milestones
• Experience of raising funds for charities or good causes
• Understanding of the charity sector
• Connections within the business sector of Nottingham and North Nottinghamshire
