Purpose of Role:
*IMPORTANT: Please only apply for this role if you hold a recognised counselling qualification* As a Volunteer Counsellor, you'll help patients and families take on board the changes they face and support bereaved families following the loss of their loved one. You'll be part of our friendly and compassionate Bereavement Team, you'll have the chance to develop your own skills and make a difference to people's lives by giving back to the community.

As a Volunteer Counsellor you'll be helping support patients and families to cope with end-of-life diagnosis and the loss of loved ones. Helping us to support our patients and families is at the heart of everything we do. This essential role will support families to deal with emotional distress in a healthy manner. Providing this service is an invaluable part of the hospice and a role which is incredibly rewarding. You will be guided and supported by the Bereavement Team Manager.
You'll be based at Nottinghamshire Hospice on 384 Woodborough Road, Nottingham NG3 4JF
As volunteer Counsellor:
• You will support individuals by listening with emotion and empathy in response to their feelings
• You will work in a timely manner to be goal setting and reviewing with the client specifically around the aspect of grief. The period of support may be time limited to short-term work measured in weeks to longer-term up to months.
• You will help with the emotional turmoil that the individuals are experiencing, helping them to understand that it is normal what they are going through.
• You will provide one-to one counselling to patients, carers and their family
• You will actively listen and respond to enable them to seek some comfort of the situation
• You will be counselling either face to face or over the telephone
• There may be a requirement for you to signpost to other relevant organisations, or other
workers within the Hospice, for more practical or more specific support.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
• ESSENTIAL To have achieved diploma level or above.
• Be willing to be part of a team and to be reliable and flexible and use your own initiative
• Be discreet and maintain confidentiality in line with Hospice policies and procedures
• This role is suitable for individuals 21 years of age and over.
• To have excellent communication and listening skills with the ability to offer emotional support without feeling a need to ‘fix it’.
• To be balanced and comfortable in your own life, especially if you have personal experience of loss, bereavement and grief and to have resilience to deal with your own emotional distress.
• To be empathetic, transparent and non-judgemental in your approach.
• To work without direct supervision.
• To meet clinical supervision requirements for your course through external supervision.
• To be comfortable relying on your own initiative and common sense, have clear understanding of boundaries and recognising your own, and the individuals needs and knowing when to seek support.
• Be willing to undertake training and attend regular management supervision sessions at the Hospice
