Purpose of Role:
Childline helps children and young people 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Childline gives children a voice. Whatever their worry, whenever they need help, we're listening. We can change childhood lives for the better.
ROLE DESCRIPTION:
Whether by phone or online, Childline volunteer counsellors are available 24/7, 365 days-a-year to support many children and young people, whatever their worry or situation.

Volunteers are not there to solve children's problems or tell them what to do. They offer a confidential space to talk through whatever is worrying the young person.

Our volunteers don't have to be experts. They are trained in the counselling skills that will enable them to offer comfort, support and, where appropriate, practical advice and protection to our callers, whatever their concern.

We will give you training and support including:

# Further in-depth, topic-based training
# Safeguarding children and young people
# Relevant IT training

There are usually 26 shifts per year. A shift is typically 4.25 hours long. You will need to attend training for 12 weeks (3.5 hours per week on a set day online), plus 4 training sessions within the base, and you will receive 1-2 hours additional learning per week.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
If you're a good listener, open-minded and can commit to a regular weekly shift of four hours for a minimum of one year after training, then counselling at Childline could be the role for you.
