Influencing and developing the workforce to support individuals facing multiple disadvantage

Our Practice Development Unit (PDU) Programme Manager, Katie Hall, was invited as a guest speaker to present at the National Changing Futures: System Change Together Forum on Tuesday 11 June 2024; to explore the role of a Changing Futures programme in influencing and developing the wider workforce that interacts with people experiencing multiple disadvantage, showcasing the PDU approach in Nottingham.

The group included leads from Changing Futures areas across the country, as well as policymakers from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing, and Communities (DLUHC), and the government department that funds Changing Futures programmes nationally.

As a collective, the forum explored the following questions:

  • How can a local area take a system-wide approach to workforce development?
  • What is within the scope of workforce development? How is it more than just 'training'?
  • How do we create systems of progression within the multiple disadvantage workforce for all?
  • How do we approach workforce development for those with strategic responsibility for multiple disadvantage? How should they be upskilled, and what in?

Katie said, "It was a wonderful opportunity to share our experiences and insights in establishing a Practice Development Unit with colleagues from various regions. We also discussed our partnership approach to system change and collaborative learning.

"We extend our gratitude to Richard and the MEAM team for inviting us to present at this meeting. We look forward to continuing our involvement and supporting this forum in the future."
