The Big Help Out

Last year, a number of national charities jointly promoted a volunteer event to mark the coronation of King Charles III. This was the Big Help Out, and it is being run again this year at the end of Volunteers’ Week (Monday 3 to Sunday 9 June 2024).

Here at Nottingham CVS, we will always prioritise local voluntary groups, so we acknowledged the Big Help Out but didn’t promote it. Now, in its second year, we have an opportunity to use the national publicity that it will generate to attract, retain, and celebrate volunteers in our local communities.

In 2023, the Big Help Out claims to have mobilised 7.2 million people to give their time, which resulted in a great boost for the sector.

There are different ways that you can use the Big Help Out to recruit volunteers, for example:

  • Advertising specialist roles like Finance Controller or Team Coach.
  • Recruiting for entry-level volunteering opportunities.
  • Sourcing new members for local community groups who engage in a particular type of voluntary work.
  • Promoting 'micro-volunteering’ and ‘taster day’ opportunities—small, easy-to-do activities that anyone can become involved in.
  • Finding volunteers to support a particular event or activity happening once or within a set period.

We encourage you to start planning now for Big Help Out’s forthcoming publicity campaign. To make the most use of it, you should perhaps consider opportunities that can be taken up during the week of 3 June to 9 June, but this is not essential.

Remember that to reach thousands of people in the Nottingham area, you can promote your opportunities, taster days, and news stories through us at NCVS, but the Big Help Out will also have its own online volunteering platform when it launches in April.
