Saturday 28 October 2023 marked the 10th anniversary of Nottingham's prestigious Black Achievers Awards. Staged at The Nottingham Belfry Hotel & Spa and attended by a host of supporters, including local and national dignitaries, the event was a huge success.

A range of Black Achievers were awarded prizes for significant contributions to Nottingham's community. NCVS sponsored the Black Achievers' Community Award.

NCVS Trustee Board Member, Mike Khouri-Bent said, "I was delighted to represent NCVS at this monumental event. The Award winner, Maxi-Leigh (from the Support for Survivors charity) was a well-deserving recipient. I think it's great that NCVS supports this important local initiative. This year's ceremony was the best so far - credit to Merlita Bryan, Davia* and the Black Achievers team. I look forward to attending next year's ceremony".

The Black Achievers Awards is well regarded locally, nationally and internationally. You can already look ahead to next year's Awards which will take place on Saturday 26 October 2024. Save the date now!

*If you didn't already know, Davia is our own Davia McKoy. Davia has been involved with NCVS in a variety of volunteer and paid roles over a number of years, currently as our Projects Support Administrator. The Phoenix Way has launched its latest £2 million grant for charities that support Black and racially minoritised communities in England and Wales.

To be eligible, your organisation must meet the following criteria:

• Be led by representatives of Black and racially minoritised communities and work within Black and racially minoritised communities
• Have an annual income of up to £150,000 per year
• Be proposing a project that works with children and young people that are 18 or under
• Be proposing a project that works with children and young people that are at high risk of becoming involved in violence.

The Clothworkers' Foundation has recently expanded the eligibility criteria for their Open Grants Programmes.

They now offer capital grants for digital infrastructure projects and will consider applications for products and software (such as websites, databases and apps).

In the past few weeks, I have had a number of conversations with Leaders of Volunteers facing a similar crisis of confidence in their own ability.

So, I did some digging about this and re-discovered “Imposter Syndrome”. The term first appeared in 1978 and was originally identified as something that primarily affected women! Subsequent writers, of course, recognise that it can affect anyone.

One of these more recent writers is Dr Valerie Young, who identifies five types of Imposter Syndrome:

1. The Perfectionist
2. The Superhero
3. The Natural Genius
4. The Expert
5. The Soloist.

Imposter syndrome affects many individuals, including Leaders of Volunteers. It is characterised by a persistent feeling of inadequacy and a fear of being exposed as a fraud or imposter, despite evidence of competence and success.

This internalised self-doubt can be particularly prevalent among Leaders of Volunteers, who often take on significant responsibilities in managing and guiding a team of volunteers with different skills and competences.

Leaders of Volunteers are responsible for ensuring that volunteers are engaged, productive, and aligned with the organisation's mission at the same time as holding the volunteer’s interest. However, this leadership role can often trigger imposter syndrome due to various factors...

AKT (formerly known as The Albert Kennedy Trust), the UK's LGBTQ+ youth homelessness charity, is marking its first year of dedicated work in the East Midlands. They are hosting this online event to connect with East Midlands based services that support young people aged 16-25 who might be at risk of homelessness.

AKT wants to connect with more services in the East Midlands to create partnerships and share the work they’ve been carrying out over the last year.

The event is for anyone who works in Nottingham City and would like to share their experiences of mental health and wellbeing at work. The aim is to learn about the extent to which mental heath is a priority for employers, whether the culture around mental health is open and supportive in the workplace, and the availability / provision of information and/or resources provided at work for mental health and wellbeing.

Information collected will help to inform the development of a workplace mental wellbeing intervention for Nottingham City employers, led by Public Health at Nottingham City Council.

Barnardo's SEEN project, in partnership with Mixed Foundations, is bringing together key expert speakers to explore a range of topics core and relevant to the disproportionality of contact with the criminal justice system experienced by children and young people from African, Asian and Caribbean heritage backgrounds.

The conference will be a mixture of speakers and workshops, allowing you to go on a learning journey whichever professional background you are coming from, on areas such as:

• Young people's experiences in the criminal justice system.
• Understanding how identity can impact the experiences of children in contact with the criminal justice system.
• Understanding how professionals across different sectors can work towards improving outcomes for children and young people in contact with the criminal justice system.

Children or young people of African, Caribbean or Asian heritage with lived experience of contact with the criminal justice system are particularly welcome to attend and have their voices heard.

You are welcome to join women members of Soroptimist International (Nottingham) for Orange Day on Saturday 25 November 2023 in their solidarity with the United Nations (UN) campaign to eliminate violence against women and girls.

Every year, 25 November and the ensuing 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence which follow (ending on 10 December, Human Rights Day) are commemorated around the world, providing individuals and groups a chance to mobilise and call attention to the urgent need to end violence against women and girls.

Members of Soroptimist International (Nottingham) will be in St Peter’s Square in the city centre on Lister Gate outside M&S from 11am till 1pm, handing out free orange ribbons. They will also be able to hand out cards with sources of support for local women and others who are coercively controlled and forced to live in this dangerous situation.

Soroptimist International is a worldwide organisation of women working through lobbying, awareness-raising and fund-raising to improve the lives of women and girls. The Nottingham Soroptimist Club has been around for 87 years undertaking projects locally, nationally and internationally to help women.

The Practice Development Unit (PDU) aims to promote and facilitate collaborative learning and the sharing of good practice among professionals and volunteers from all sectors, in Nottingham and neighbouring areas, who work with people experiencing severe and multiple disadvantage (SMD). This is understood as a combination of mental ill-health, substance misuse, homelessness, offending and domestic abuse, among other issues.

The PDU was one of several local partners, including Changing Futures, BAC-IN and Nottingham City Council, who organised a recent symposium to address the pressing issues faced by people from Black, Asian and minority communities experiencing severe and multiple disadvantage (SMD). The event was held on 28 September 2023 at the Indian Community Centre Association.

It featured a range of engaging presentations and discussions designed to strengthen understanding of different experiences of multiple disadvantage amongst people from minoritised communities in Nottingham and to consider how voluntary and community organisations, public sector bodies and members of the Nottingham SMD Partnership can come together to make a difference, to ensure that all people who experience multiple disadvantage have access to help they want and need.

The day brought together experts, professionals, and community members to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by these communities and to explore effective strategies to overcome them by shedding light on the scale and nature of SMD within Black, Asian and minoritised communities in the city, while identifying barriers and gaps that exist.

Some important resource packs have been created as a result of the Building Bridges event.

Employability and Skills Community of Practice

Join Small Steps Big Changes (SSBC) for this coproduction and partnership working event which covers:

• Infant feeding as a civil issue and how you can further promote breastfeeding.

The training is delivered by national charity Campaign for Learning and is funded by the Money and Pensions Service. 

This free 90-minute workshop is for practitioners working with families with diverse needs who are looking to start conversations about money; and practitioners teaching family finance who wish to support families with diverse needs. The approach supports children aged 3-7 with a focus on diverse needs, including autism and social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.

By attending you will:

• Learn how to deliver an inclusive, differentiated and accessible financial education programme through rich learning experiences using Makaton, sensory icons, storytelling, songs, games and family activities.
• Receive all the resources and tools you need to deliver the activities including facilitator’s guide, multimedia content, session plans and certificates.

This programme is aimed particularly at community-facing organisations working to support older people to thrive in safe, healthy and well-connected homes and communities. Free of charge, it will be delivered principally via a series of webinars held between November 2023 and May 2024.

Dunhill Medical Trust is partnering with the team at Moore Kingston Smith Non-Profit Advisory and the University of Birmingham’s School of Social Policy to deliver high quality training as part of a Capability Development Scheme. The training forms an integral part of the Trust’s Academy offering for community-facing organisations.

The Academy aims to bring community-facing organisations together with academic and clinical researchers and other experts in the field to improve organisational resilience and effectiveness and help to deliver evidence-informed systemic change.

The first webinar, on Tuesday 28 November 2023, from 9am to 10.30am, focuses on the topic of Impact.

Join Juno Women's Aid and the rest of Nottingham in "turning orange" as part of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign. They have chosen Monday 27 November 2023 as a focused day of action.

On 25 November 1960, sisters Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa Mirabal were murdered. The date of 25 November was declared International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in 1980. In June 1991 began a global campaign of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The campaign runs from 25 November to 10 December.

FMB Radio is a radio station built for-and-by the underrepresented communities of Nottingham. It was founded as a collaboration between the (F)earless Youth Association, (M)ojatu Foundation, and (B)asement Studios in 2019.

Thanks to funding from the East Midlands Community Fund, FMB Radio will soon receive some of the latest podcasting equipment that is available. In turn, they are making that available to members of the community to get your voices heard.

Nottingham City Council has launched a Gambling Related Harm awareness campaign, running until the end of December 2023.

The campaign will highlight the risks and impacts of gambling and aims to raise awareness of:

• What the different types of gambling related harm are (financial, social, mental health, employment, etc).
• What the different types of gambling are.
• How to recognise when you or someone you know is at risk of gambling harm.
• Where to go to get support for yourself or someone you know

The campaign aims not to attribute blame, be stigmatising or triggering and has been carefully developed in collaboration with a co-production group, including residents with lived experience.

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement, that celebrates and encourages doing good. Giving Tuesday is all about the different ways you can give, encouraging people to:

• Volunteer your time
• Give some money
• Campaign for something
• Share your skills
• Fundraise for something
• Donate goods
• Buy something from a charity shop.

Every charity, business, employer, donor and volunteer can get involved and share their experiences of giving, hopefully encouraging others to do so in the process.

If you haven't started planning how the day could bring in more support for your organisation, now is the time to act. Your campaign can be longer than one day!

The Cost of Giving Crisis campaign is the result of NCVO’s recent survey that has revealed an alarming picture for charities, especially over the harsh winter. Costs are rising while funding is falling and demand continues to increase.

The Cost of Giving Crisis campaign is a call to action on behalf of and for the sector.

NCVO is highlighting:

1. Providing practical help and support for the sector
2. Calling for government action to properly fund charity contracts
3. Asking the public to donate spare time, not just spare change.

Deadline: 5pm on Wednesday 10 January 2024

The awards, created by the Garfield Weston Foundation in partnership with Pilotlight, celebrate and support great front-line charities in the North of England, the Midlands and Wales which specialise in the fields of Community, Welfare, Youth, and Environment.

Charities with at least one paid full-time member of staff in a leadership position and an income of less than £5 million per year are eligible to apply.

Award winners will receive £6,500 unrestricted grant funding alongside access to leadership mentoring from four senior professionals across diverse private and public sectors. These “Pilotlighters” offer expert coaching on everything from operational efficiencies to sustainable long-term business strategies, and organisational growth.

Online information sessions to help with submitting applications are being held during November 2023.

Nottingham City Council's Public Health team is developing a workplace mental wellbeing programme for Nottingham City employers. The two aims of this programme are:

1. To improve mental wellbeing at work, and
2. To improve access to mental health and mental wellbeing support services at work and outside of work.

They are seeking the views of employers of all sizes and sectors across Nottingham City to inform the development of this programme, due to launch in early 2024. The purpose of this survey is to understand:

• What is important to you about supporting mental health and mental wellbeing at work.
• How you already do this.
• How confident and skilled you feel in doing this.
• What you would like the programme to offer.

Responses will be collected anonymously and reviewed to inform programme development.

Nottingham Women’s Centre is looking to submit a briefing to represent the voices of women in Nottingham on the current Sentencing Council consultation (Miscellaneous Amendments to Sentencing Guidelines 2023) which includes a proposed mitigating factor on pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal care.

If you have any experience with the women you serve, women with lived experience of sentencing while pregnant or in the postnatal period, and are involved in frontline work in prisons and with women under probation supervision after leaving custody, your contribution is welcome.

The Code of Fundraising Practice sets the standards that apply to fundraising carried out by all charitable institutions and third party fundraisers in the UK. The Fundraising Regulator is currently carrying out a two-year process of reviewing and updating the Code of Fundraising Practice between 2022 and 2025.

The public consultation (2023) phase of the review is now open.
