Nottinghamshire Hospice has expanded the Wellbeing offer (formerly known as the GRACE Unit). They are now welcoming patients and carers into the hospice five days a week.

There’s also a wider variety of activities to suit different patients’ needs and interests, including:

• A programme of group sessions, talks and therapeutic activities
• One-to-one sessions with a registered nurse or therapy staff
• Tai chi, relaxation and complementary therapies
• Arts and crafts, baking, and tabletop games
• Information and advice sessions on specific conditions and welfare rights
• Support for carers.

Self-referrals are welcome. If you have a friend or family member with a life-limiting illness or know somebody caring for someone with a life-limiting illness, please encourage them to get in touch for the support they need. All services are provided free of charge to patients and loved ones.

From Wednesday 3 May 2023, the service hours will be extended on a Wednesday evening until 7.30pm.

The vision of the national charity FoodCycle is to make food poverty, loneliness and food waste a thing of the past for every community.

The Women’s Urgent Support Fund is supported by over £3.2 million of National Lottery funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK, to respond to the cost of living crisis. Thanks to National Lottery players, £3 million will be awarded in grants to 60 small, local community organisations led by and serving women, enabling 20,000 women to access vital specialist support services over five years.

Over two rounds of funding they aim to commit 50% of the grants to projects that support women experiencing racial inequality and/or women with disabilities.

Your organisation can apply if you:

• Are delivering frontline services led by, for and/or serving women
• Are responding to identified need and demand as a result of the cost of living crisis
• Are based in England, with an annual income of less than £1 million.

Applications are encouraged from smaller organisations and, wherever possible, Smallwood Trust will support these smaller organisations with capacity building needs that emerge throughout the programme. You can apply for a minimum of £15,000 and maximum of £60,000 to be split over three years.

Four sets of grants are open until Sunday 4 June 2023.

Voluntary organisations and community groups helping improve the health and wellbeing of Nottinghamshire county residents can now apply for a range of financial support thanks to the Nottinghamshire County Council Local Communities Fund.

A booking form is now available for the Volunteers' Week Celebration, Information and Promotion event taking place on Saturday 3 June 2023, 11am to 3pm in Nottingham's Arboretum.

Please come along, and invite all your volunteers and colleagues to this event! 

This booking form (link downloads Word document) will not only save your space at the event, it will also let us know what resources you are able to bring, or would like us to provide. We have a limited number of tables, chairs and shelters (these could be gazebos, market stalls or small marquees). 
 
Your stall at the event will be your organisation's base on the day where you can promote your service, your opportunities, offer an activity to visitors and anything else that you want to do. However, this is not a fundraising event. 
 
Many of us will have volunteer teams who have been volunteering remotely for the past three years or so. Your stall can also be a rallying point for these volunteers where they can meet face to face, possibly for the first time. We can optimistically imagine that a number of volunteer picnics will take place around the stalls in the warm sunshine. 
 
There will be a number of activities, displays and walks on offer from organisations taking part, so if you and your volunteers can also offer an activity on your stall, or more widely in the Arboretum, it would make the day even better. 
 
We will have the use of the bandstand, so if you have musicians, dancers or performers who would like a slot, please let us know because this would add a lot to the whole day. 
 
In fact, we would welcome any ideas that you can bring to make this celebration one that volunteers will enjoy.

Vehicle access to the Arboretum will be available on the day in order to deliver your equipment and materials. However, there is no general parking on the site and we recommend that your volunteers and colleagues use the tram to get to the event.

Green social prescribing is a way of connecting people to nature-based activities and green groups, projects and schemes in their local community for support with health and wellbeing. Often this will be through a referral from a Link Worker based at a GP practice or another primary care professional.

Our scheme in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, called GreenSpace, is one of seven government Green Social Prescribing Test and Learn sites. It's all about improving people’s mental health. Green providers, social prescribers, voluntary organisations and community initiatives will help connect many more people with nature-based activities, helping everyone to feel better.

There won't be a GreenSpace bulletin this month (April 2023). It will be back in May (with the blossom). However, you can enjoy the latest edition of The Big Green Book, which has been updated and reformatted this month.

The Big Green Book has been developed as part of the GreenSpace Green Social Prescribing Project. It is a directory of nature-based activities and opportunities around Nottingham City. Some of the provider activities extend into parts of the county.

This special event celebrates the culmination of Thortify’s project The Art of Self Care, which has been generously funded through Arts Council England’s National Lottery Project Grants. 

Over the last year, The Art of Self Care has brought together social workers, educators, and professional artists to develop free self care resources that harness everyday creativity, tackle stigmas surrounding mental health and support public wellbeing.

Free copies of Thortify’s three open access self care workbooks will be available on the night.

Throughout the evening, there will be opportunities to enjoy live music and poetry, get creative and socialise, all in the comfort of Café Sobar, East Midlands’ first ever alcohol-free bar, restaurant and venue.

This year’s Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Action Week takes place between Monday
15 and Sunday 21 May 2023, with a focus on increasing diagnosis rates.

To support the week of action, Nottingham City Council is hosting two free Dementia
Friends Information Sessions.

These will take place on Level 4 foyer of the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham
Tuesday 16 May 2023, from 12.30pm to 1.30pm and 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

These friendly and interactive sessions lasting approximately one hour, will be held
in person and delivered by a Dementia Friends Ambassador. During the session you’ll:

• Learn more about dementia
• How it affects a person
• What you can do to help people affected by dementia in your community.

Promising Young Woman is a 2020 thriller, starring Carey Mulligan as a troubled young woman haunted by a traumatic past. As the name suggests, the narrative highlights the lasting damage sexual violence can have on Promising Young Women.

The first screening for Equation's Reel Equality Film Club since the pandemic, this will be an event to remember which celebrates this one of a kind film and the work taking place in Notts to keep women safe at night. Join us for a free online workshop where we will be exploring modern day slavery and its intersection with severe and multiple disadvantage (SMD).

This interactive session, run by Nick Clare, Assistant Professor in Economic Geography at the University of Nottingham will include:

• An introduction to the concept of modern day slavery and it's overlap with severe and multiple disadvantage (SMD)
• A more in depth exploration of modern day slavery that includes preliminary findings about how this issue presents itself locally within Nottingham City
• A group discussion into modern day slavery drawing on the insights and experiences of attendees with the opportunity to contribute and shape ongoing research.

Audience: Anyone with an interest in modern day slavery who may also be keen to influence understanding of what modern day slavery looks like locally. We welcome individuals with lived experience of SMD to attend, as well as professionals and volunteers from all sectors.

Mama is the latest work from Olivier award winning choreographer Botis Seva, who formed his company Far From The Norm aged 19. Influenced by hip-hop theatre, his talent grew largely unmentored and was nurtured on the streets of London.

A new House of Lords campaign wants to make it easier for small charities to engage with the House and bring about change.

As Parliament’s second chamber, the House of Lords is an effective place to engage for small charities campaigning on an issue.

This consultation is open until Tuesday 30 May 2023

Nottingham City Council is making plans for a service which will help people who live in Nottingham to improve their health and wellbeing in more than one way. This service will be called the Integrated Wellbeing Service.

The Integrated Wellbeing Service will offer help and support to people living in Nottingham who want to make positive behavioural changes for the benefit of their health and wellbeing, for example to stop smoking, be more active, or eat a more balanced diet. The service will also be able to help people in other ways, for example by thinking about a person’s emotional wellbeing, or if there are other issues negatively impacting their health that they may need help or support with.

This is your opportunity to say what you think about the Council’s proposals. These are available in PowerPoint form on the Nottingham City Council website, along with a link to an online survey.

This call for evidence will inform the development of a new care workforce pathway for adult social care (referred to as ‘the pathway’). Over the coming months, the Department of Health and Social Care will work with people who work in and draw on adult social care, to co-develop a pathway which sets out the skills, knowledge and behaviours that people working in adult social care need to deliver high-quality, personalised, compassionate care and support.
