It's important that we celebrate the personal achievements of individuals from the NCVS team, and tell you more about us from time to time, especially where those efforts and activities can bring significant changes to the lives of families you work with. Did you know that bereaved cohabiting parents can now claim bereavement benefits? Please inform your beneficiaries that, as of 9 February 2023, the eligibility criteria for bereavement benefits has changed, meaning cohabiting parents and their children will be able to get financial support. These families were previously denied support because the parents weren’t married or in a civil partnership. The campaign to change the law has taken 11 years. It was led by NCVS staff member, Georgia Elms, who is also Campaigns Ambassador (and previous Chair) of the charity WAY Widowed and Young, along with Alison Penny MBE, Director of Childhood Bereavement Network and the Child Poverty Action Group. Georgia has been working with NCVS since April 2022, covering the Communications and Engagement Officer role while a colleague is on maternity leave. Georgia was widowed in 2006 when her husband Jon died suddenly from meningitis aged just 38. The next day she discovered she was pregnant with the couple’s second child. Read Georgia's story on the WAY website. Families who were previously unable to claim these benefits, some of them bereaved as long ago as 2001, will also be able to make a new claim for retrospective payments if they were eligible on or after 30 August 2018. The Childhood Bereavement Network (CBN) estimates that this could be up to 21,000 families. This is provided they claim within a 12-month window. Georgia said, "When something really horrendous happens in your life (like being widowed), that’s what the welfare state was set up to do and it should step in to support people. But over the past 12 years, the system has really been letting thousands of bereaved families down. "There have been so many setbacks...but to know that over 20,000 people will now benefit and WAY has helped with this change is amazing! I just didn’t realise it would take quite so long." To find out who is eligible, see Bereavement Support Payment on the gov.uk website. More information about the background to the campaign and further support is on the WAY Widowed and Young website. Thank you, Georgia! |
